Concept

In this introductory Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga) workshop, carve and print your own two-color design and learn the concepts of printing with water-based pigments, kento registration, and pressing with a baren - all hallmarks of this stand-alone process dating back to the 17th century.

Experience

The workshop begins with a hands-on printing demonstration from prepared blocks. Then move into designing, carving, and printing your own work with demonstrations along the way. Carve on 9x12" blocks (both sides) with a final image size of 7x10". Examples from prior workshops are shown. At the week's end, students have the option of exchanging prints with one another.

Skill Level

All levels welcome.

INSTRUCTOR

Mary Brodbeck loves life. Whether it's travel and the out-of-doors, spending time with friends and family, working in the art and design field, or serving students and customers...she's all in. Originally trained in industrial design, she picked up a wood carving tool in her thirties and never looked back. She studied Japanese woodblock printmaking with Yoshisuke Funasaka in Tokyo in 1998. Now and for over 25 years, Mary has relished developing her contemporary American vision by means of this historic Japanese technique. Much of her source material is from the Great Lakes watershed region where she was born and still lives. Her work can be found in numerous museum collections. She enjoys sharing her work through public presentations, gallery representation, and workshops.
