Concept

In this one-day workshop, explore the intersection of painting and weaving in an artistic practice. Considerations of color, composition, and texture are emphasized as we work without a loom to transform our ideas into meaningful woven paintings.

Experience

The morning begins with a series of guided and open painting experiments; working with water-based paints on paper. While the paint dries, use pre-cut strips of colored paper to learn a selection of weaving patterns. In the afternoon, harness your creativity, innovation, and curiosity to create woven paintings. Students can expect a combination of collaborative conversations and one-on-one guidance from Wendi throughout the day. Slides of relevant contemporary and historical artwork is shared, alongside information about the historical origins of the weaving patterns introduced.

Skill Level

Open to students of all skill levels.

INSTRUCTOR

As an educator, Wendi Turchan Martin's goal is to help students find their way, not her way. She guides them toward their individual motivations while also asking questions that lead to new modes of thinking. Wendi’s work explores connections between home, landscape, and the body. When not making work, she enjoys hiking, as well as tending to her houseplants, which all have names. Her favorite is Carol, a giant split-leaf philodendron. Wendi earned her MFA from University of Oregon and has taught foundations-level courses at universities in Oregon and Wisconsin. She regularly teaches workshops centered on creativity and experimentation within 2D art practices.
