Concept
Scratchboard is a method for creating dramatic black-and-white images that mimic the style of woodcuts and engravings, but without the printing process. India ink is brushed on a board that is pre-coated with a thin layer of white clay. Scratching tools are then used to scrape textures into the black ink layer, revealing the white beneath.
Experience
Demonstrations, group discussions, and lots of hands-on practice address preparing your scratchboard surface, mark making techniques, planning compositions, and the many possibilities this medium offers. Individualized instruction and feedback from Becca guide you in the pursuit of your goals. Leave this workshop with practice exercises and more complete compositions created from your personal photo references.
Skill Level
Some drawing experience is helpful.

INSTRUCTOR
Rebecca Jabs is an artist and educator whose work is an observation of nature with a hint of narrative. Her philosophy and methods encourage students to develop a closer relationship with nature - draw to learn as you learn to draw! Rebecca has a background and degree in art education, but her dual interests in art and science led her to the Science Illustration Graduate Program at California State University at Monterey Bay. Today she works as a freelance illustrator and part-time college drawing instructor. When not making work, Rebecca is an active member of the birding community; going few places without a pair of binoculars.
