Concept & Experience

This half-day seminar unravels the traditions and history of abstraction by analyzing the path that abstract painting took during the 20th and early 21st century. With a focus on contemporary attitudes and approaches to the practice, attendees are introduced to current tendencies in contemporary abstraction. The seminar dissects the four major working models within abstraction, including process-based, geometric hard edge, expressionistic, and classic abstraction. Attendees are provided with the conceptual tools to unpack and understand why abstraction became an alluring and compelling approach to making art that continues to persist. All are welcome.

INSTRUCTOR

As an educator, Shane Walsh helps students connect to the fact that making art is fun and exciting. In his own practice, he makes abstract paintings that are visually thrilling, yet encourage the viewer to think more deeply about what they are seeing. Shane is represented by Asya Geisberg Gallery (NY) and The Alice Wilds (WI). When not in the studio, he can be found at the beach; swimming as much as Wisconsin’s weather permits. Shane holds an MFA from the University of Washington and teaches at UW-Milwaukee.
