Concept

This three-day workshop introduces you to the creative and colorful potential in the plants and dirt located right outside your door. Using plants and soil collected from PenArt's surroundings, discover how creating a wonderful array of gouache or watercolor paints can be a launchpad for making your own organic art supplies.

Experience

Lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on work explore different methods that can be used to extract pigments from plants and commercially available vegetables to create Lake Pigments; and even learn how to process and refine dirt for pigment purposes. Leave this workshop with a basic gouache or watercolor paint using your own extracted pigments, as well as the knowledge to continue exploring this process and its possibilities.

Skill Level

Artists of all levels and backgrounds welcome. All equipment and materials provided.

INSTRUCTOR

A firm believer there is an artist, maker, and storyteller in everyone, Allen Morris’ goal as an educator is to help students find the best way to tell their stories through creative processes. His favorite moments are when they do! Allen’s own work focuses on the relationship between humans and their environments. He is also a huge fan of printmaking and bookmaking. When not in the studio, he is exploring the landscape in search of inspiration or baking sourdough bread. Allen earned his MFA from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is Assistant Professor at Black Hills State University.
