Concept

This workshop invites artists into the world of contemporary monoprints. This technically unencumbered process is a catalyst for experimental one-of-a-kind image making. Traditional monoprinting involves applying ink to a plate, manipulating it, then transferring the image to paper using a printing press. Contemporary monoprinting embraces tradition plus Pandora's box of mixed media and other techniques which offer new combinations to choose from.

Experience

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, learn traditional monoprint techniques in combination with mixed media additions such as water-based crayons, graphite, and colored pencils. Explore print techniques such as additive and reductive, layering, blend rolls, transfer imagery, and use of "found objects" to create the unexpected. Draw inspiration from the Door County Plein Air Festival paintings on exhibit, as well as your own sketches and photo references. Individualized instruction and feedback is provided throughout the workshop.

Skill Level

All levels welcome. No prior printmaking experience necessary.

Instructor

Kate Borcherding is an artist driven primarily by ideas. She easily moves between 2D and 3D work as her research explorations have led her to drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. As a teacher, Kate’s goal is for students to leave with gained confidence, knowledge, resources, and skills to continue making art for many years to come. When not in the studio, she is dreaming up new things to cook, growing plants, and playing accordion. Kate earned her MFA from Indiana University and is a Professor at Sam Houston University (TX).
