Concept

Have you always wondered how a piece of jewelry is constructed? This workshop is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of metalsmithing. Beginning with a blank piece of metal and a cabochon stone, learn the construction skills needed to deign and build a unique finished piece of jewelry.

Experience

Demonstrations and hands-on practice introduce you to the tools used to cut, shape, and texture metal sheet and wire. Learn how to use the soldering torch to join metals and continue to gain confidence through guided practice. Build a bezel to set either a round or oval cabochon stone. Finally, explore a variety of techniques to patina, polish, and complete your piece. Leave this workshop with at least one piece of jewelry, as well as the basic building blocks to continue your metalsmithing journey!

Skill Level

Designed for beginners; no prior experience necessary.

Instructor

The first half of Susan Richter-O’Connell’s life was spent in pursuit of a career in dance, and the second is immersed in metalsmithing. Though seemingly very different art forms, she believes her first studio practice greatly informs her second. Susan is a nurturer by nature. In the classroom, she creates a safe environment in which she encourages taking creative risks, being vulnerable, and contributing to the group’s journey. Susan’s wisdom comes from being a predominantly self-taught metalsmith, and believes in sharing with her students the mistakes that precede the successes!
