Paint Door County En Plein Air: Fall Color with Bethann Moran-Handzlik

Concept

Alla prima studies are often the prized possession of plein air artists. Discover the fresh accuracy of working from observation en plein air. In this rigorous and fun-filled workshop, learn how to create structurally sound paintings in the landscape.

Experience

Each day a morning study and afternoon study is introduced. Mornings are spent in the studio focusing on the day's concept and technique before departing by car to paint en plein air. As Door County Plein Air Festival Best of Show awardee, Bethann knows the best spots to paint, including locations in Peninsula State Park, local orchards, and Ingwersen Studio and Gallery. All sites have bathrooms nearby and little hiking involved. Additionally, one day is spent painting an outdoor still life at PenArt. Ample time is dedicated to painting with individualized feedback. Leave this workshop with several alla prima paintings, a pile of notes, tricks-of-the-trade, the joy of camaraderie, and new ideas to inform your future work.

Skill Level

Experience setting up your plein air kit, as well as the ability to carry equipment to the site is helpful. All levels of skill are welcome.

Instructor

Bethann Moran-Handzlik's work has garnered many awards including the 2023 Door County Plein Air Best of Show. Her work is held in private, corporate, and public collections, and have been exhibited in regional and national exhibitions, including plein air events, galleries, and museums. Bethann was awarded a Hudson River Fellowship with Grand Central Atelier, a La Napoule artist residency in France, among others. Her work is represented by Tory Folliard Gallery in Milwaukee and Edgewood Orchard Gallery in Door County. Bethann enjoyed a long teaching career and has taught at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Whitewater, Skidmore College, and more. She continues to enjoy teaching workshops. Bethann is married to the poet Patrick J Moran and together they have three wonderful children.
