Concept

An Italian phrase that translates to "at first attempt", alla prima is a technique where a painting is completed in one sitting without allowing the layers of paint to dry in between. In this one-day workshop, explore several approaches and materials that help create a successful painting in one session.

Experience

The day is comprised of demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on practice. Lessons cover the importance of drawing and the implication of the gesture from the beginning to the end of the painting, as well as how to manipulate color with values at each stage of the process. The information shared translates to any subject matter. Leave this workshop with a better understanding of how to create an alla prima painting and the practice behind it.

Skill Level

All levels welcome.

Instructor

First and foremost, Jonathan Aller is an artist; one that lives and breathes the need to create. As an educator, he aims to help students build bridges; connecting new content and skills with their prior knowledge. In his own work, Jonathan combines contemporary and classical realms to create a new identity within drawing and painting. When not in the studio, he is either sleeping or spending time with his wife and five-year-old son with a sketchbook in hand. Jonathan holds an MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design where he also teaches.
