Concept
This four-day workshop focuses on surface decoration of porcelain pottery in the green state using underglaze painting, image transfer, templates, and sgraffito carving. Create a series of cups and/or small plates in porcelain and learn how to use surface techniques and underglaze.
Experience
Demonstrations introduce using paper plates, developing drawings as templates, transferring images from paper, and other techniques for applying deliberate surface. Class handouts and exercises assist in developing image ideas from nature forms, thematic ideas, and text. Debbie provides some blanks for students to get started.
Skill Level
Open to students interested in learning new techniques and possibilities for creating more complexity in surface.
INSTRUCTOR
Debbie Kupinsky works primarily in porcelain with an emphasis on the natural world and every day objects. She has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (MT) twice, The Appalachian Center for Craft (TN), and the Arts/Industry Program at Kohler (WI). Debbie earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Louisiana State University. She is an Associate Professor in sculpture and ceramics at St Norbert College. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experimentation, play, and working in series. When not in the studio, Debbie enjoys gardening, running, and kayaking on the Fox River in Appleton.
