Concept

The history of lidded ceramic vessels includes thousands of years of humans creating such utilitarian objects for ritualistic, ceremonial, and day-to-day usage. Whether their creation is geared toward funerary urns, fermentation and storage of foods and beverages, or perhaps for one's cherished keepsakes, lidded ceramics are one of the most versatile, iconographic ceramic vessel types in terms of their scale, proportions, and applications. In this workshop, learn the technical approaches and concepts tied to a wide variety of lid-to-vessel types on the potter's wheel and through hand building.

Experience

Through brief lectures, demonstrations, and guided instruction, create a variety of lidded vessels. Attention is paid towards the mechanical connection between lid and vessel, as well as to how such forms may be further personalized through additional form, texture and mark-making, pattern, and underglaze color enhancements. Expect to leave this workshop with new skills and one or more lidded vessels.

Skill Level

Beginning to intermediate experience with the potter's wheel and/or hand building. To dive deeper into the surface of your pieces, consider joining Jared's Clay and Ceramic Surface Development workshop on Saturday.
