Concept

Designed for students looking to build a solid foundation in representational drawing and watercolor painting, this workshop shares a clear, step-by-step process. Practice and gain confidence in seeing, understanding, and translating visual phenomena using the fundamentals of drawing and watercolor painting.

Experience

Demonstrations, presentations, and individualized feedback guide you through the process of drawing and painting from a model from start to finish. Spend two days working with the full figure and two days with the portrait. Begin by learning how to approach the initial linear drawing - the “block-in”, focusing on the techniques that you can employ as you strive for accuracy in proportions, placements, and gesture. Move into watercolor painting and begin thinking three-dimensionally as you discuss value with respect to the fundamentals of light phenomena and form. Learn about edges, what causes them, and how to create a variety of edges in your work. Finally discuss color theory based on the Munsell color system, basic structural anatomy, perspective as it pertains to the figure, and composition.

Skill Level

Open to all levels of experience.

INSTRUCTOR

Philip Salamone firmly believes everyone can learn to draw and paint. While every beginner spends some time making work that isn’t great, he promises that if you enjoy the process and commit to learning, nothing is impossible. In his own practice, he aims to make paintings that are beautiful, meaningful, and skillful. When not in the studio, Philip can be found mountain biking, spending time with family, and still, at least, thinking about art. He earned a Fine Art degree from UW-Madison and completed a three-year program at Grand Central Atelier (NY). He teaches at both UW-Madison and his own school, the Atwood Atelier.
