Concept

Explore the technical aspects of creating directional light and shadow, as well as luminous light in painting. Relationships of color, value, and transparency are investigated in-depth, along with using photographic sources in combination with direct observation. While the workshop focuses on interiors, landscapes, and still lives, the course material applies to all genres and subject matter.

Experience

A balanced curriculum of demonstrations, discussions of contemporary and historical art, and hands-on studio work address methods for approaching light, composition, point-of-view, color, and format. Michael works step-by-step through the creation of a layered indirect painting including subject selection, underpainting, color mixing, and transparent glazing. Work simultaneously on multiple paintings throughout the week using your own photo sources, on-site still life setups, and photographic subjects supplied by Michael. Individualized feedback is provided throughout the workshop.

Skill Level

Open to oil, acrylic, gouache, and watercolor painters with basic experience. All demonstrations are completed in oil.

INSTRUCTOR

Michael Banning initially pursued a degree in architecture. However, he found he enjoyed the drawing and painting classes much more than the math and physics classes and made the switch to fine arts. Years later, Michael’s work explores the psychological and spiritual experience of light and space in architecture. When not painting, he is teaching; helping students find their own personal approach to the materials and concepts at hand. Michael earned his MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design where he is also a faculty member.
