Frequently Asked Questions for Students


How do I know which workshop to take?


The workshops are grouped together by artistic discipline (2-Dimensional Studio Arts, 3-Dimensional Studio Arts, and Photography & Digital Arts). They are listed in order by date within each discipline.

How do I know what level I am?

In order to make the most of your time at PenArt, please review the skill levels. All programs are listed at the minimum level of experience required. If you need help deciding if a workshop is right for you, please call 920-868-3455 or email info@PeninsulaSchoolofArt.org

Can my child take an adult workshop?

Adult workshops are designed for students age 16 and up. The Registrar is happy to discuss your younger child and appropriate workshops on a case-by-case basis. Parents should also check out our Summer Studios for Young Artists program, from June to August each summer.

Can I work in a different media other than that listed in the workshop description?

We list all potential media with the workshop description. We can address others on a case-by-case basis. You would need to have a mastery of application and color mixing in your chosen media, as the instructor will not be teaching or demonstrating with your media.


Can I leave my supplies in the studio overnight?

Yes, you can leave your work area set up.  PenArt is locked and secure overnight. How late can I stay and work in the studios? We are open until 6pm Monday through Friday, until 5pm on Saturdays and closed Sundays. Student are invited to stay until 6pm each day of their workshop EXCEPT the last day. On the final day of your workshop, we ask you to have your belongings packed by 4pm, so that we can prepare the studio for the next workshop.

Where can I buy art supplies?

You can shop at any art or craft supply shop. However, for very specific or specialty supplies, you will probably have to order by phone or online. The instructor often includes some recommended vendors in their supply list. You may also call PenArt and we can help you find your supplies. While you are in Door County you can find a selection of art supplies at the Artists Guild (920-743-9900) in Sturgeon Bay. You should phone them first to see if they have what you need. We do suggest checking the supply list two weeks prior to the start date of your workshop for any last minute additions to the supply list.

Specialized art supplies may also be provided by your instructor. This will be indicated on your supply list, along with the estimated cost that you will need to pay directly to the instructor.

Can I order art supplies and have the company ship them to PenArt?

Yes, please call and alert the Registrar that you will be shipping a package. Make sure it is marked with your name. Use our street address for shipping: Peninsula School of Art, 3900 County F, Fish Creek WI 54212. Please be aware that shipping to Door County often takes an additional day or two longer than the company tells you. We do ask that your items do not arrive at PenArt more than 2 weeks before the start date of your workshop.

I have a question about something on the supply list for my workshop.

Please call us and we can often answer your question.  We can also contact the instructor on your behalf. If you have a question, chances are others in your workshop may have the same question.


Can I use your ceramic/jewelry/painting studios for my own work?

During our busy workshop season, studios are not available. However, from approximately November through April, studio space is often available. You must be a current member of PenArt and there is a per person, per day minimal charge, or you can get a discounted rate for a five-day week. See info on our Open Studios Program here.

What if I have a lot of supplies to bring in from my car?

We have wagons available to bring in your supplies. If you require extra assistance, we will have a staff member at the entrance on the start date of your workshop to help you.

What if I have special needs (can’t do stairs, special parking, etc)?

Please let the staff know of any special needs at the time you register and we will make sure to accommodate you. Please do not wait until you arrive to alert us.



Do you have a work study program?

No, we do not have a work study program at this time.

Do you offer scholarships?

Yes, we do. Generous donors have funded scholarships for specific target audiences. Click here for more information.


Can I take only 1 or 2 days of a longer workshop?

No, we feel that the curriculum for each workshop is designed as a whole, and that the educational experience would not be of the quality we aim for. Having a student arrive after the first day of workshop is also extremely disruptive to the learning of the rest of the workshop.

I heard my favorite teacher is teaching next year. How soon can I register for the workshop?

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. We begin accepting registrations as soon as the catalog is available online. Our target publishing dates are:

  • ADULT catalog: Mid January
  • YOUTH catalog: Early April

Please feel free to call or email for updated publishing dates. Your registration is not confirmed until we receive your payment or credit card number.

What if I am signed up for an outdoor art workshop, and there is bad weather?

We always schedule an indoor or covered space for outdoor workshops to use in case of bad weather, as well as for meetings and critiques.



Do you have lodging on-site?

At this time, we offer lodging from June through August at a townhouse condominium adjacent to our campus. Availability is limited and reserved on a first-come-first-served basis. Click here for more information. 

As a premier vacation destination, Door County offers all types of lodging. We have a list of lodging accommodations listing to get started. If you are looking for a particular type of lodging, or still have questions after viewing this list, let us know and we can offer you some suggestions.

What if I have special dietary requirements?

We are not able to provide for special diets. Our lunch menus generally offer a variety of choices, and often (but not always) include a vegetarian option. You always have the option to bring your own food, and we provide a refrigerator and microwave for student use.

What if I have allergies or sensitivities to chemicals or solvents?

Please let the staff know when you make your registration. We can discuss particulars of your needs and the supplies and chemicals that will be used on campus when you are here. We are a turpentine-free campus, and require the use of Gamsol for those workshops using solvents.

What if I want to bring my dog?

We do not allow dogs on campus, in the buildings or in the parking lot while you are in workshop. The Door County Visitor’s Bureau (800-527-3529) can help you find lodging that accepts dogs, as well as kennels in the area. We do of course follow Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act which allows for certified service dogs.

What if I have a special need (wheelchair, can’t take stairs, handicapped parking, etc)?

Please let the staff know of any special needs at the time you register and we will make sure to accommodate you. Please do not wait until you arrive to alert us.

What if I get hurt while at PenArt?

Immediately let your instructor know and let the office know as soon as safely possible We will ensure you are taken care of in a safe and timely manner.

Do I have the internet? A wireless connection?

We do have a wireless connection if you bring your own computer, tablet or smartphone. We DO NOT have a public terminal or computer for you to access the internet. 

Can I use my cell phone at PenArt?

Not all cell phones get reception in Door County. We require that you turn your cell phone OFF or put it on “vibrate” when you are in the studios.

Where is the nearest airport?

The nearest airport is in Green Bay. You can rent a car there, or use the Door County/Green Bay Shuttle (920-746-0500).

What if I am flying in and can’t take my supplies on the plane?

You may ship your supplies to PenArt before your workshop. Please be aware that shipping to Door County may take a day or two longer than the shipping company tells you. Please ship to our street address: Peninsula School of Art, 3900 County F, Fish Creek WI, 54212. If you need to use solvents in your workshop, please contact the Registrar directly to make arrangements for disposal of your solvents. We do ask that your items do not arrive at PenArt more than 2 weeks before the start date of your workshop.    

What if someone needs to call me while I am at PenArt?

The office will accept phone calls for students only in case of emergency.
